The de/Rastra oscillographic synthesizer developed by Kyle Evans is a real-time audio/video instrument and computer-interfacing device that allows a performer to generate visualizations intrinsic to cathode ray tube technology while simultaneously creating the acoustic analog of the displayed imagery. Sounds crazy – and yes, it definitely is:

Computer interfacing:
Atmel 328 communicates with a program designed in Max/MSP via xBee wireless communication.
4 Force sensing resistors: generate sounds and visuals by varying the amount of pressure applied to them.
3 axis accelerometer: modulates signals as the instrument is moved through space.
4 momentary push button switches: Generates sonic and visual accents and quick events.
6 flip switches: Used to change between the different program states throughout the performance.

Visualizations:
Multiple audio signals created by the Max/MSP patch are amplified by a 4 channel power amplifier @ 100W per channel and inserted into the CRT’s yoke (X and Y deflection axes controlled by different signals). This deflects the electron beam in a fashion that is directly connected to the audio being produced.
Additionally, an electromagnet inside the CRT, also being driven by an audible sine wave, deflects the beam further creating the colorization.

The de/Rastra oscillographic synthesizer is an open source project and will eventually be accompanied by tutorials on methods of CRT hacking. You can find many more info on the yaktronix website or in the following scribd document:

SHINY TOYS promotes the work of artists who use analog and digital technologies to explore and cross boundaries in sight & sound. Artists who operate in the fields of sound, electronics, projection, light, video and film, will present their audiovisual projects that range from liveperformances to installations. Besides that, there will be workshops and of course the opportunity to discuss and exchange different views and ideas on media‐aesthetics.

Last year there have been some great live performances by Incite, Sculpture, 170cm, Pieces of Quiet, Tour de Vinyl and many more. Some ‘whistle-blowers’ just revealed to VS that in 2012 there will be fantastic video mappings and more great performances and workshops, so stay tuned for updates

Martin Thoburn was one of the first developers to release a public custom TouchOSC layout for Resolume. Now he has done a nice interactive video installation called ‘Exquisite Motion Corpse’, that integrates resolume, a Mac, an iPad with TouchOSC and several monitors in a non conventional manner. The idea was based on an old surrealist parlor game, rather on the idea of identikit pictures. The user combines body parts that stack together, all set to rhythmic timing, to create unique beats and stories via a touch-screen iPad controller. The video below says it all.

More info about how the Exquisite Motion Corpse works: http://www.exquisite-corpse.com/how-it-work/

“Touch Resolume” is a custom layout for TouchOSC that allows you to control Resolume Avenue and other programs capable of midi oder OSC over a wireless network directly with your iphone or ipod touch WITHOUT midi mapping. Just load the software and start controlling dozens of functions in Resolume, no mapping required.. Touch Resolume controls Resolume Avenue directly with OSC commands.

On his Vimeo channel Shawn Feeney presents two approaches how to generate images out of tones and shades out of images. He did these works some time ago, using various programs

Cornelius Cardew’s Treatise – Realization (2002):
Treatise is a graphic musical score written by Cornelius Cardew in the 1960ies comprising 193 pages of lines, symbols, and various geometric or abstract shapes that eschew conventional musical notation. Implicit in the title is a reference to the philosophy of Ludwig Wittgenstein, which was of particular inspiration to Cardew in composing the work. The score neither contains nor is accompanied by any explicit instruction to the performers in how to perform the work.
Shawn Feeney played the Treatise composition by using the software MetaSynth to generate the sounds from scans of the pages and then animating the score in After Effects. Sine waves are generated from the black areas of the score as it scrolls from right to left, with the y-axis corresponding to pitch. An imaginary vertical line in the center of the screen is the “sounding membrane”.

MIDI Visualization Techniques Using Correspondance (2002):
This work quite goes the other way round. Here the music comes first in form of of midi notes. Using the realtime MIDI note input (specifically pitch, velocity, and duration) an app made with Director and Flash generates corresponding animated visuals. Correspondance has a number of interpretation paradigms, mapping the MIDI input to various visual characteristics (x/y position, size, color, etc). As you can see, the av-sync is very straight forward.
Correspondance also has a networked option where two performers can link to each other. Each performer sees the animation generated by the other player’s musical performance. An audiovisual feedback loop can be created if each performer treats the visuals an an animated graphic score.

Unfortunately the app only works on Mac OS 9 so it’s not currently available.

Visual society likes the op art of Victor Vasarely a lot: a painter and sculpturist born in the city of Pécs, Hungary, in 1906. His paintings are very elaborated in terms of scientific method and objectivity, using easy colors in complex and often geometric structures and patterns. Some of his paintings are quite close to kaleidocopic or glitchy fx, as you know from vjing, his sculptures could tolerate some serious video mapping.

A decent quote by Vaserely refers to his idea about the meeting point between art and science – which might also fit as a description of vjing:

‘the two creative expressions of man, art and science, meet again to form an imaginary construct that is in accord with our sensibility and contemporary knowledge’.

If you are around in europe this summer, a visit to Fondation Vasarely in Aix-en-Provence (France) is strongly recommended.

Did you ever wonder how to move a videbeamer while performing? Has a LJ ever shown you how fast he can move his Gobos whilst your projection was fixed to a static wall? Here is the perfect solution for you! …

Did you ever wonder how to move a videbeamer while performing? Has a LJ ever shown you how fast he can move his Gobos whilst your projection was fixed to a static wall? Here is the perfect solution for you! Get a VMS and get rid of the LJ

As you might well know from any kind of events, there are three common technologies of Moving Lights. The Followsspot which is moved manually as a whole e.g. in theatres, the Auto Scanner with a moving mirror and the Movinghead with a moving lamp.

With video you would have the choice between a Video Scanner (e.g. patented Video Moving System – VMS) and a Video Moving Head. There are pros and cons for both systems:
The Moving Head can be panned 360° degrees globally, the projector and the motors are integrated into one device. But it is quite heavy und not very easy to replace.
The Scanner is much lighter than the Moving Head, which also makes it faster at moving the image. The VMS is easier to replace, because you can just hang it up a traverse. But it will cover a smaller area than the Moving Head, because the mirror can not move as free as the moving head. There are VMS with and without an integrated projector, the systems without a projector are cheaper and will have a greater livetime than a Moving Head with built in Video projector, because you can just simply change the projector.

The VMS is equipped with a three-phase-step-motor, so that the projections can be freely positioned in the room precisely even with very low speed. This opens completely new possibilities in lighting and interior design, projection as well as video installations. Imagine projecting a video of circles, squares or diverse objects and panning this video in the room. How cool is that?!

In the end, the moving mirror of the VMS in combination with a projector provides a multifunctional source of light and video projection – in other words it is a video scanner which is lighter, more flexible and cheaper than moving head projectors. By using all kind of common light steering systems like DMX or an iPhone App, projections and light can be positioned anywhere in the room and easily be moved at your own convenience.

A wicked project for analog DIY fans is the Lumenoise project developed by Niklas Roy. Lumenoise light pen turns your old CRT-TV into an audiovisual synthesizer.

Unlike modern flat TV’s, old school CRT’s draw the image line by line onto their phosphorescent screen. A photo transistor, placed on a tube TV’s surface, can recognize when the part of the image is drawn underneath it. If this photo transistor is connected with a micro controller which generates the video signal, the controller can localize the exact position of the photo transistor on the screen. That’s the whole trick.

You love video mapping? You are creative, you do have talent and you are an expert in Video Mapping?
// Don’t delay, Come participate – to the second edition of VLS Video Mapping Trophy in 2012!

This competition aims to become the key event in the area of 3D video mapping, and to reward productions evolving in different creative and cultural areas each year. It will also encourage meetings between student artists and professionals by creating a powerful springboard for new talent seeking wider exposure.

This year, the candidates are invited to imagine a scene and create a visual universe using a model which can be downloaded, then to design a high quality HD video lasting 1minute, 30 seconds that can be projected onto a 3D structure which will be tailor-made for the occasion.

In 2011, Heavent Paris attracted over 16,000 visitors and 350 exhibitors. You have until 1 September 2012 to send in your HD film. So don’t hesitate any longer and register here.

The jury will be looking for different aspects of competent artistic expression and original works showing high quality in the areas of creation and technical expertise.

“Podium”

The virtual spaces and contents are growing, creating a new concept of reality and virtual reality. What eyes can see could be a illusion, but our brains wants to live that experience as real. The space could be more than we can see. In art there is no winner, just experiences. The podium could be not applied to art, but could be a stairs to imagination.

I have experimented how can I have minimal colour scheme with a lot of movement and motion on simple objects as the cubes. Just like a classic shape of a cube would have a hard time to find the right space of itself. There is two section of the animation, in the first part the cube is moving as a whole shape, and with a white wire creating a psychedelic effect. the second section, when the cubes find out how to be stable, from the static cubes moving out some form, and element. Sounddesign: RenDez.

fullscreen:

The work developed for the “Mapping Trophy Video” trying to put 3D in the foreground. More than a work of light and shadow, it attempts to deconstruct the projection surface and deceive the viewer by the prospect.

The shadow of darkness elusive zone formed by the interception of light by a body. As the video mapping, shadow, natural projection, is able to adopt any volume or surface. Shadow is inspired and appropriates the shadow theater by creating shadows in the light and not light. Inspired by traditional theatrical scenery and traditional methods of Chinese shadow play. Shadow tells the story of a young adventurer, Siegfried, opera created in 1876 by R. Wagner. An adventure capturing the volume of the scene.

There have been rumours in the mobile phone world, that this new Nokia phone would have an amazing camera resolution. Today Nokia pureview has been shown at MWC (Mobile World Congress): it has a camera resolution of 41MP!

Wait 41mp?? 41mp is an incredible resolution for a camera, thinking of ordinary DSLR like Canon EOS 5D Mark II just having a resolution of 21mp. With 1/1,2″ this phone definitely uses the biggest camera chip in a mobile ever, but its not about the pixelhype. The Nokia 808 PureView camera is an adaption of straight forward satellite technology developed by Carl Zeiss (Nokia is an exclusive parter of CZ).

The Nokia 808 uses the mega high pixel density to have a three times lossless digital zoom, so that you can zoom into the 41mp image and make a smaller foto of lets say native 5 or 8mp resolution without any optical or digital zooming, or it averages 1 superpixel out of 7 pixels, so that the camera can still take great fotos during the night with a resolution of 5 or 8mp (the averaging is no real interpolation, Nokia calls it ‘oversampling’).

To understand that in a better way, load these original pictures (big filesize!!) and meanwhile watch the video below:

Capoeira in Rio

To get more into detail also read the Nokia PureView Whitepaper

[viddler id=e9abdbb4 w=545 h=307]

No wonder it somehow reminds in Odyssey 2001, camera developer Damian Dining is a Stanley Kubrick fanbwoy

The other specs are also quite nice:
1080p video with 30 Frames (real 1080p!)
HDMI out
Bluetooth 3.0
DLNA
USB On-the-Go (Connect a harddrive, mouse, keyboard or whatever)
Secure NFC
FM transmitter (listen to mp3 on your radio)
SD-Slot
changeable battery
free worldwide navigation (Nokia Maps)

Nokia 808 Pureview will be available in Europe in Q2/2012 for roundabout 629€.

.. okay its quite a Canon ad, but who cares. Its epic!

When we listened to the ‘Bright Siren’,
we envisioned bright lights flickering in the darkness,
and the lyrics ‘not to make it a memory’ has stuck in our minds.
From these inspirations, we came up with the idea of using camera strobos
as pixels to create an animation out of light.
We actually lined up 250 cameras
and controlled each strobos through a computer program.
All the lights in the film are real, and no CG were used.

Google Maps is quite customizable for different tasks. Imagine restaurant guides like qype or using Google Maps for your own website with your own icons. A neat project I found uses Google Streetview to tagg and explore streetart and grafitti spots around the world. Now you can sit at home and explore the best streetart spots! Just search for some of the most recognized streetart artists like Banksy or Blu and check out some of their magic painting in Streetview, or tagg some grafitti in your hometown. (Qustion is if police also uses this to find and identify grafitti spots?! Maybe, maybe not).
Streetartview also lets you check out random streetart, the last submissions and has a connection to picasa foto albums with better images of the same place.

Unfortunately it only works when the streetart is viewable from a street that was captured by Google Streetview. So my town is not available, even tho we have some great streetart here.. but anyways.

It’s to be questioned, whether you would want a technical device to open and close your eyes automatically and get soring muscles from this, or not. But maybe this device could also help fighting common problems with screen work. Following a study by ophthalmic hospital in Tübingen, Germany, poor variation at display work leads to a reduction of eye blinking frequency from 9,7 to 4,3 blinks a minute [»Der Ophthalmologe« (Bd. 102, S. 805)]. By automatically increasing the eye blinking frequency, aching dry eyes could be prevented. Another plus could be that when the eyes are closed 50% of their usage during work, you could save up to 12 hours of sleep per day
